The ID Card Revolution
Millions of people in Britain will start receiving their compulsory national identity cards in only four years time under the detailed plans unveiled by the home secretary, David Blunkett, yesterday.
Under legislation to be published in January, the five million people who apply each year for a passport or driving licence will automatically be issued with an identity card and their personal details stored on a new national identity computer database.
Mr Blunkett made clear yesterday that they will also have to undergo hi-tech electronic eye and fingerprint scans to ensure that the new combined ID card/passport or driving licence cannot be forged.
The identity card will also be compulsory from 2007 for a further 4.6 million foreign nationals living in Britain.
Identity cards are not going to go away. They are here to stay and the government is adament to push them through. The government department I work for is classified where the Retina Eye Scan technology is what will be used to provide fool proof ID card accuracy. Yes thats right. This is not a pipe dream. This is already today’s technology.
These new cards will be extremely hi tech and it WILL NOT be possible for anyone to copy them or forge someone elses ID because you, the owner are unique. Your fingerprints and retina details will ensure that these cards cannot be cloned and used by anyone else. This is a fact.
In ten years time you will get off an aircraft and upon exit to the landing hall you will hear the tanoy announce that you should remove any sunglasses or any item covering your eyes. From over 800 yards away a multiple scan will be in progress and it will be flicking through each traveller in recognition of their British Citizenship. All unrecognised travellers will be funnelled into numbered channels for country verification and status checks. Anyone travelling on a non chip compatible passport will be refused entry. All persons previously not having travelled to the UK will be recorded with a quick retina scan and finger prints taken.
To book into hospital, withdraw your cash, pay your bills - soon , in the not too distant future you will have one card that can do this - your ID card. Gradually, as you get used to your card and use it every day for standard ticket machines on public transport, vending machines ( it will act like a credit card across all vending machines ) etc, you will become resigned to the fact that this system is here to stay. In time your blood group, national insurance card and other personal details will be added to the card.
There are already plans to set up stations across the UK. Currently 18 of these are being administered in key cities and the scanners are being checked for compatibility with standard CCTV systems. Yes, you didn’t know that but the new CCTV systems and those cameras that need replacing will feature retina ID from a distance of over 500 metres in all conditions, day or night.
Within 15 years your salary will be paid to your identity card and your tax will also be deducted from it. Your car log book, personal possessions and all important details including passport and travel will be incorporated within this one ID card.
Those that wish to escape. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Other countries will adopt this system within a matter of a few years as countries around the world refuse entry to citizens of countries who do not provide fingerprinted and retina identification. You will conform. You will conform.
By 2035 your reliance on your ID card will be complete. Your house door will open with its insertion, your car will have no lock but an ID card slot and it will act upon the correct card insertion. All your bills will be paid on your ID account. Your card will work from any vending machine, shop or supermarket and cash will no longer be carried.
Terrorism has all but been wiped out. You cannot move these days without your ID card and wherever you move you are recorded by virtue of the fact that you use your credit card to spend your money. There are no fake credit cards or fake ID cards. They are just not available. They do not work. THe central computer and scanners can determine genuine or fake cards. Anyone caught with one ( impossible without the owners actual participation ) faces £15,000 fine or one years imprisonment. Any producer or persons caught replication or attempting to replicate the card face life imprisonment and confiscation of all monies and properties owned.
There will be no law insisting that you carry your ID card around with you - there is no need - your reliance on it is absolute. You could not survive without it. No one accepts cash any more. Even for items of only a few pence it is simpler to swipe your card through a machine than open a till and mess about with change.
Welcome to the future

Yawn
About 2.2 million sq km (0.85 million sq mi) in size, Saudi Arabia is mostly desert. It’s bordered to the south-east by Oman, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates, to the north by Iraq and Kuwait, and to the west by Jordan. Western Saudi Arabia is dominated by a mountain chain which runs the entire length of the country, getting higher and wider to the south. About half the country (an area the size of France) is taken up by the Rub’ al-Khali, or Empty Quarter, the largest sand desert in the world. A second great sand desert, the Nafud, stretches its way across the north-west of the country, while the centre and north of Saudi Arabia is mostly gravelly plains. The east is flat and low-lying, an area of sabkhas (or salt flats). Its main geographical feature is the gigantic Al-Hasa oasis.
Quaid-e Azam in a number of his speeches said that Muslim should be considered as a nation.he said that the only realistic solution to the political problems of South Asia is to recognize the Muslim as a seperate nation. He defined the Muslim nation in following words:
“We believe that every comprehensive and authoritative defination of nationhood is forced to recognize the Muslim as a seperate nation and Muslims and Hindus are the two major nations of the sub-continent.We,The Muslims, are the nation of ten corore people. In addition to it we are a nation which has its own culture, civilization, language and literature, art and craft, history, moral values, character, legal syatem, customs and traditions, calendar, natural talents, aims and objectives. In short, we have our own faith and belief. We are seperate nation by all canons of international law.”

Dual Core Laptops - Sorting The Facts From The Fluff
Mobile computing technology is ever changing and the latest evolutionary step is the development of dual core processor laptops.
New CPU’s for notebooks.
The recent introduction of the NAPA Platform has shown some significant enhancements on the older Somona technology. The new NAPA platform offers a lot of significant advantages for a dual core laptop such as a 60% performance increase with its physically smaller dual core processor which can utilise memory more effectively whilst using less power as well.
What are the enhancements for laptops?
Performance Increases:
- Dual core processing with 667Mhz Front Side Bus
- Latest Intel 945 Chipset
- Generation 3.5 Intel Integrated Graphics
- DDR2/667 Dual Channel Memory
- Lower power consumption = Increased battery life
- Latest IEEE 802.11 Standards
We’ve been playing with a couple of the latest Toshibas to see exactly what these developments have to offer a real world user.
Fingerprint Reader Technology.
New fingerprint technology will allow users to bypass multiple password entry with one swipe of the finger.
Bundled with some awesome software Toshiba owners can now utilise this technology to logon to Windows, access secure websites, secure files and folders and even logon to a laptop secured with a Bios password.
Laptops that have the fingerprint reader hardware have now got the software to match and utilise what the fingerprint reader hardware can do.
Toshiba’s new OmniPass and Protector Suite QL software gives the user all of the following features and functions.
- Data encryption
- Individual fingerprint application assignment
- Multiple print storage
- Fingerprint website access
- Bios fingerprint authentication
- Single touch boot feature
In addition to this sort of technology, Toshiba’s new Wireless Authentication logon feature is impressive to say the least. This technology coupled with the Toshiba Wireless Key Logon utility enables a user to setup their BT (Bluetooth) enabled mobile phone to act as a key, with similar password entry free logon from Bios to Windows simply by activating the BT function on your phone when in range of your laptop.
There’s been a bit of misinformation floating around regarding these new dual core notebooks so we’d like to clear up a couple of points.
1. If a machine has a stated processor speed of 1.66GHz then that’s across both cores, not 1.66GHz on each core, the advantage over a 1.66GHz single core processor would be improvements in performance and data handling.
2. The new dual core processors don’t require software written specifically for the CPU, you would still see an improvement running all your exisiting software.
3. A dual core notebook will actually run cooler than it’s single core counterpart, this is due to the fact that the processor is more efficient and uses less power. This is a welcome development in the world of mobile computing where overheating machines are a constant bugbear for users.
The evolution of dual core processors is big news in the laptop world, as they become more common in the marketplace it will be interesting to see how they cope with the multitude of applications that will be thrown at them.

Wi-Fi Roaming and Cell Phone Roaming Options
The Canadian company, Seaboard Group crystal ball is glowing with Wi-Fi predictions. In a recent commentary on this issue, Canadians Cut Their Wires on the Wi-Fi phenomenon, Seaboard Group predicted that by 2007, Wi-Fi hardware equipment and integration services will exceed 800 million with shipments of 1.7 million base stations and 3.2 million access cards.
This prediction is quite impressive. However, these figures do not take into account the computers that have built in Wi-Fi capability, which a new generation consumers will be buying.
What are some of the drawbacks to this huge growth spurt?
The benefits to this Wi-Fi phenomenon clearly outweigh the drawbacks.
If you are a US cellular subscriber and have signed up for wireless Broadband Access with Verizon wireless, you are locked into Verizon’s network. This means you can not use the public Wi-Fi hotspots with your smartphone or PDA.
Wi Fi Roaming vs. Cell Phone Roaming
If you want to call some one, or receive calls on your cellular phone and you happen to be outside your home calling area, some carriers will charge you a per minute overage access fee. These out of area charges apply even if you have a one or two year cell phone contract.
More and more people are taking advantage of the benefits associated with Wi-Fi roaming. If for example, you subscribe to your own Wi-FI provider, Wi-Fi roaming means you can use your username and password to access a different Wi-Fi service on another network without the hassle of signing up for the second Wi-Fi service. Under this scenario at month’s end, the service bill will show Wi-Fi roaming charges incurred from use of an additional Wi-Fi provider. This is a huge advantage, if you don’t want to sign up with 20 different Wi-Fi providers every time you go to a different access point. Use the same username and password to access the partner Wi-Fi network.
Who are some of the Wi-Fi providers that have roaming agreements?
Spotting a hotspot is easy, simply click on one of the 3 databases above to find a free wi-fi public gateway access point near your area. Fatport, a Vancouver based wi-fi provider uses roaming agreements with other Wi-Fi providers to allow Fatport subscribers access to over 4000 hotspots in North America. I recently found out that I could buy a 24 hour pass to access a Fatport wi-fi hotspot for only $9.95 and only $299.95 for the entire year.

Names Ringtones - Know Who is Calling You
Phone models are getting fancier and fancier as mobile technology progress. More and more high tech features are being incorporated into phones like megapixel cameras, mp3 players, Bluetooth, video playback, among others. These additions are turning mobile phones into true convergence equipment.
Not surprisingly, the accessories that are being put inside phones are also getting more sophisticated and try to keep abreast with these fast changes in mobile phone technology. Ringtones are a good example of this development.
In terms of ringtone development, we have indeed come a long way from the “ancient” ringtones that were nothing more than glorified bleeps and rings. As mobile phones undergo their own technological evolution, so do the ringtones that we have been putting in our phones. From those literal RING tones, phones eventually carried melodic ringtones that you also have the option to compose on your own. Then came polyphonic ringtones that approximate midi files. Polyphonic ringtones were the first step toward the development of tones that actually simulate what it is to hear a song or actual melody in your phone.
From there, MP3 ring tones or real tones became all the rage. You now have the chance to use your favorite song as a ringtone for your phone.
Now ringtones have undergone another stage of evolution with the introduction and rising popularity of “names ringtones”.
What are names ringtones anyway? They are personalised ringtones that you can download to your mobile phone. The difference here is that this type of ringtone contains the name of the caller, which you can then assign to the appropriate contact in your mobile phone’s phonebook.
For example, you can buy a names ringtone that contains the name “Amy” and then use it by assigning it to “Amy Brenner”, a contact in your phonebook.
Names ringtones are very convenient and useful to mobile phone owners because it automatically notifies you who is calling on your mobile phone without even looking at the screen. This kind of advantage did exist before because you can assign a dedicated ringtone to a particular contact. But the added advantage here is that, with a names ringtone, it brings customisation and personalisation a step further. There is something unique and refreshing to actually hear the name of the person you are calling as it gives your mobile phone the semblance of having an artificial intelligence reminiscent of those science fiction movies where futuristic gadgets “announce” who the caller is in their communications devices.
A names ringtone brings the convenience of no-look recognition to callers that contact you on your mobile phone. The personalisation aspect is a big attraction to mobile phone owners. Phone owners love to do little things to their phones to put a personal stamp on an otherwise mass market device. They would change the phone’s casing, wallpaper, themes and even lights to reflect the individual taste and personality of the owner. With a names ringtone the personalisation enters the phonebook itself.

How To Find Cheap Mobile Phone Deals
With such a competitive marketplace offering so many variations on the same theme and the market becoming cost led how does the consumer find the best cheap mobile phone deal?
The seemingly ubiquitous mobile phone has become an indispensable item. A market which was almost niche as little as 10 years ago is quickly heading for saturation and the price of mobile phones is falling even as technologies and features develop. Everyone has one - from the kids in the playground to your Gran and Granddad. Contracts expire and the handset models move out of fashion, superseded by the next on almost a monthly basis. But as the price falls and we become more informed about the market and in what constitutes a good deal - how do we find a cheap mobile phone deal that fits our wallets and our communication needs?
Upon renewal of your mobile phone contract, your network will no doubt roll the terms of your contract on and offer you the obligatory upgrade, but in a competitive marketplace it would be unwise to sign up without checking out the competition first. Similarly the local mobile phone shop can probably offer a decent deal allowing you to look at different deals and network providers and at first this might seem like a decent deal in comparison, but are you going to find a genuinely cheap mobile phone deal in the High Street?
Probably the best place to begin your search is online. Resellers covering numerous major networks as the High Street retailers do will allow you to search and compare deals, but with the removal of overheads associated with the bricks and mortar store you might be able to find a good cheap mobile phone deal (http://www.dialaphone.co.uk/cheapmobilephones.html ).
Finding the right network package can be tricky to and again, the web can be used to refine your search and arm you with the information you need to make the right decision, (http://www.reviewcentre.com). It can be important to get an unbiased view on what you are getting for your money so that you get a service that suits you as well as simply a cheap mobile phone.
When your phone contract is up do a spot of legwork before you agree. You just might save yourself a few pounds and get a better, cheaper mobile phone out of the deal.

Contemplating Selling Your Cell Tower Lease For A Lump Sum?
Many landowners who have leased land for a cell tower on their property are receiving letters from third party companies. These letters suggest to the landowner that due to wireless carrier consolidation and due to technology, that the cell tower lease may be terminated early. By selling the lease to one of these companies, the landowner averts the risk of early termination and can recieve a lump sum immediately.
What is important to note is that these companies would not be interested in buying the lease if they felt that there was a significant risk that the lease would, in fact, be terminated. The reality is that cell towers are going to be around for a long time and the leases will continue. That is not to say that your particular cell tower lease is not susceptible to termination, especially in light of carrier consolidation. Recently, wireless companies like AT&T and Cingular have merged. (Both AT&T and Cingular are trademarks of their respective companies). Estimates of how many duplicative sites will be terminated as a result of this merger range from 8,000 to 20,000 sites. While the exact number is unknown, some landowners will receive termination letters in the mail. It is possible to determine whether or not your particular site is susceptible to termination by reviewing the cell towers in your area.
The sale of the land leases for a lump sum is one way of averting this risk. Additionally, there are other reasons why an individual landowner might want to consider selling his cell tower lease rights. These reasons include a scenario where the landowner has plans to sell the underlying property in the next few years. Another scenario is where the lump sum payment can be used to extinguish existing high interest debt.
One area that every landowner contemplating selling a cell tower lease should be concerned with is the taxation of the transaction. It is imperative that you consult with your accountant regarding any offer and whether or not the payment is susceptible to capital gains treatment.
Lastly, there are industry experts available who can assist you in the determination of whether or not the sale of your lease asset is a sensible decision. Make sure that before you make a potentially costly decision, you consult with your accountant and industry experts.

Thieves Want Your Laptop and Your Data
Thieves find laptops easy prey because they are small, light and easy to handle. Anyone who takes their eye off a laptop in public, even briefly, may never see it again.
While special theft protection devices are offered for mobile computers,
experienced thieves often view this as little more than an annoyance. In the end, the loss of the hardware is only part of the problem. It’s when sensitive data resides on the laptop that real problems begin.
Common thieves can be good at instantly taking advantage of a laptop owner’s inattentiveness: The thief strikes while passing by, snapping up laptops in a airport food courts, desks in offices or unlocked automobiles. The hot laptops are then converted into cash easily by using an internet auction site.
“One in ten laptops gets stolen,” according to Bill Schiering, of
Camera Security Now, which sells security camera systems.
Businesses with laptops can be protected with an inexpensive internet based camera system, says Schiering.
“Security Camera systems are likely at best to scare off the common garden
variety thieves,” says PC expert Andrew Wendt from the Computer Service Now.
“More important than protecting the laptop is protecting sensitive company data,” says Anthony Cipollone, Tech Travel Agent for Rentacomputer.com, a nationwide computer rental firm. The theft of databases hurts companies more than the loss of the laptop, especially since company laptops are often covered by insurance and databases are not.
If a thief gets control of company documents or sensitive access codes, these can lead to greater damages. Users must therefore take steps before a theft occurs. This includes encrypting data on the hard drive or by only accessing company data via Terminal Services or Citrix remote desktop operating systems,” Cipollone says.
To prevent access to the laptop’s data, users should also create additional Windows and BIOS passwords, Wendt says. Experienced hackers can get around these, however, warns PC expert Cipollone. An alternative for preventing unauthorized access is fingerprint scanners, says Wendt from Computer Service Now.
In the end, a combination of steps is the best, Wendt advises. The latest theft protection devices for laptops are now offered as PC expansion cards, containing a motion sensor and encryption software is a must.
Companies should record the laptop’s serial number so that the police can make a positive identification in case of a theft recovery. Laptop owners can also make recovery of their laptops easier engraving the company name in the plastic case of the laptop.
There one more trick for keeping thieves at bay while traveling. Use a regular suitcase instead of a classic laptop bag for transporting the laptop. The surest way to keep a thief away from stealing your company laptop is to not make it obvious you have a laptop computer.
