Graduation Tassels

The most out standing feature of graduation ceremonies happens to be the ceremonial graduation attire. The characteristic gown, cap and hood are a mark of distinction and give a sense of pride to the graduating students. However there is a small accessory that stands out amidst the overwhelming attire. Graduation tassels are situated on the graduation cap and consist of a collection of short cords or threads secured together at one point and used as suspending decorations. The tassel is secured at the centre of the mortar board and dangles freely off the edge of the graduation cap.
graduation tassels
have a long history and date back to medieval times when they were adorned by scholars. Today they are used to signify the level of academic achievement or to indicate any awards bestowed on a graduating student. Graduation tassels are hung on one side of the graduation cap during the ceremony and when the degrees or diplomas are conferred, the tassels are flipped to the opposite side of the cap. While its historical significance is yet to be established, this is a more of a modern tradition, which symbolizes the transition from one academic level to another. The tassels are often kept as souvenirs of memorable graduation ceremonies.
