In pot-limit poker online, the pot sizes can swing from small to large depending on how loose or tight the players are. Because the betting structure is different than No-limit poker online, players who switch into P-L poker have to adjust their thinking to the accommodate the different betting structure and to effectively control pot size.
P-L plays very differently when a player has a big drawing hand or attempts to bluff. Because players may not go all-in if their chip stacks exceeds the pot, the action can take dramatic turns. For instance, in N-L a player may go all-in when drawing to lots of outs, and win the pot right there. In P-L, that player can only bet the pot rather than intimidate with an all-in shove. It’s possible the original raiser will then be re-raised and put on a tough decision for the rest of or most of their chips. In P-L, the tables can get turned on aggressive players. The fold equity goes to the second bettor behind the original raiser.
When you do have a strong hand in P-L, you need to get chips into the pot on every street so that if the action does go to a river showdown, the pot will be large enough so that you may be able to shove all-in. Slow playing in P-L brings little reward if the pot is puny. When you have a strong hand in P-L, bet the flop, turn and river to build up a bigger pot, because you can’t count on making a big river raise in pot limit poker.
