The main thing we noticed since having a baby is that time is a more valuable good. We do not have enough time for many things or time is really tight to accomplish certain tasks before the next feeding time has come. Think about feeding. The little one needs to be fed every 3 hours. Take approx. 15 minutes for the preparation, diaper change, cuddling, etc. before the actual feeding. Now take 30 minutes for the actual feeding, burping, holding and interacting with the baby. This really leaves you with approx. 2 hours and 15 minutes (if all goes well, the baby goes to sleep and does not wake up, etc.)

So, what can you really in a little more than 2 hours? Think about it. If you have to go somewhere you have to dress the baby, put him in the car seat, pack a diaper bag, etc. and you lose even more time. Planning daily and weekly events gets important in areas like buying food. Usually it does not work very well to push the grocery shopping from Monday morning to Friday afternoon the same week.

Writing down the tasks and appointments for the next week every Sunday might be a good option for you if you feel really stressed during the week. Try to combine shopping and other errands you need to run. A 5 minute extension of driving distance to a second store with a 15 minute extension of shopping time can save you a complete trip the next day and take out all the trip preparation from your schedule. Instead of rushing to run errands the next day you could have one trip (which most likely stresses you out anyway) with combined tasks. This tactical approach can result in less wear and tear on yourself and on your baby. It actually can save you money and resources (gasoline, wear and tear on your car, etc.).

All parents (including myself) often tend to forget these simple things when it comes to planning the day ahead. Get back some time for yourself and spend it on things you enjoy.

Children and teenagers are relentlessly bombarded with merchandise that entices. It can be difficult to find contentment when a newer, better, faster gizmo of the moment hits the market every day. What’s a parent to do?

First, try to put yourself in your child’s shoes. The pressure to fit in and to belong is particularly strong for young people. Part of that belonging involves having the latest “it” item or article of clothing. It makes sense that you feel frustrated at times. Perhaps you’ve even reminded your teen that money does not grow on trees or that you are not an ATM.

With a little patience, planning and compassion you can stop fighting with your teen about money.

To start, set aside some time for a family meeting and bring some of the following options to the table (your teen may also have some ideas about how to balance saving and spending). Look for options that you are both comfortable with and willing to try.

Involve your teen in family budgeting. It may be difficult to understand what the limits are if you have no idea of the fixed expenses and income for the household.

Agree on spending limits. This method works well with expenses such as clothing. If you are shopping with your teen, establish non-negotiable spending limits well in advance of your trip. This will give your young person time to plan how best to use the allotted funds and cut down on frustration and wheedling later. Remember, the spending limit is non-negotiable - no whining or brooding allowed. It is also important to let your teen live with his or her spending decisions. If your child decides to buy two high cost designer items rather than ten more reasonably priced items you must give them the space to own the choice.

Listen to your teen. There will be many times when you will have to deny a “must have” request. If you have not previously established a spending limit be sure to say no with compassion and offer to explore other alternatives for purchasing the item or doing without. If you have previously agreed on a spending limit try to honor the agreement unless you have new information or another compelling reason to change your mind. Again, it must be compelling - the idea is to help your teen develop the discipline for responsible money management (after all, you can’t go to your boss if you spend all of your money before pay day!).

Give a regular allowance - A weekly or monthly allowance helps your teen plan for both anticipated and unanticipated expenses. Some parents and financial experts have suggested the three-thirds plan: one-third of the allowance is earmarked for spending, one-third for short term savings (such as school clothes or the class trip, and one-third for long term savings (such as a car). If this is the plan that you and your teen agree to try allow your teen to be responsible for the money decisions he or she makes by refusing to rescue.

Encourage alternative sources of income - your teen may want to start a small business or find a job. This can be a great way to make up the difference if money is misspent or if your teen is working toward a big dollar goal.

Making friends is a skill, just like playing the piano or riding a bike. Skills can be learned and behaviors can be changed. While it may require more effort for some people to be comfortable in groups, it can be learned, especially if the child is willing to put forth the effort and knows that she has your support.

Be sure to encourage a child’s positive efforts to get along with peers and to find a friend, even when it appears that such attempts are not meeting with success. Remind her of the fine qualities that she has that will add to the friendship when just the right person comes along.

Another reminder is that making just the right friend for her may take some time and not to give up. Help her to see what she has to offer as a friend. For example, you might say: “I really appreciate it when my friends call me and invite me places. It makes me feel welcome and accepted. Even on the times when I am not able to go, I still feel good to know they thought of me. That is why I treat them with kindness and respect, because that is how I want to be treated.”

In my workshops I find it helpful to make a list of what people look for in a friend. You may want to make such a list with your child. After brainstorming it is easy to include such things as:

• Trustworthy

• Kind and compassionate

• Willing to share happy and sad times

• Loyal, will watch my back

• Sense of humor

• Positive attitude, upbeat

• Similar interests

• Fun to be with

• Not be too possessive or needy

• Cooperative

• Enjoys being with me

If you look at the list, almost never does it include psychical attributes, they are all character traits and inner personal skills. If we don’t have those skills, we can work on obtaining them by practicing a little each day until it becomes automatic action. It is this attitude of openness and willingness to share that is communicated to those we would like to be our friends.

The irony is that people, young and old, tend to blame outward appearances for lack of friends, when it is the inward attitudes and character traits that are longed for in friendship. We are not searching for lovely nearly as much as loyalty in a companion and buddy.

When we realize that it is not our big ears, speech impediment or color of skin that stops others from befriending us, as much as it is how we treat others and feel about ourselves, we will have more to offer a friendship. As you encourage making a list of what the child is looking for in a friend, be sure to mention that appearances may be deceiving. She may very well know many in her class who are also looking for just the right person to hang around with.

Hopefully, your child will draw her own conclusions that she is a valuable person and has much to bring to a relationship. And likewise, there may very well be many people who meet the criteria of a friend that she has been overlooking.

It is more empowering for a child to list her own positive qualities that will make her a valuable friend than for you to do it for her. This is her work, but you are the support team. You cannot make your child happy, popular, talented or attractive to other children. If you think you can, you will be setting both of you up for disappointment and a great deal of frustration.

What you can do is offer her suggestions, assistance, opportunities and options. Hopefully, she will recognize the clues of social interaction and ‘click’ with a good group of friends who will support her in her school years and become life long buddies.

How you manage social situations affects the way your children view social interaction. If you have meaningful relationships that add pleasure to your life, they will see that and want to have the same thing.

and treated as the gospel. But if you want to be an
effective father, you can skip most of them and
concentrate on common sense rules that have always
worked. They won’t always make you the most popular
Dad, but they’ll always be effective:

Rule #1 Expect a Great Deal From Your Kids

If your kids know that you expect a lot from them,
they’ll rise to the occasion. Everything from
saying please and thank-you, to efforts in school
or on the athletic field. If expectations are made
clear in a loving atmosphere, your kids will know
you think a lot of them. And when they know this,
they’ll respond.

Rule #2 Always Be Willing To Be Part of the Problem

When you’re convinced that someone in your family
is causing the problems and you’re blaming them
for it, you better realize that this problem won’t get better
until you accept that you’re making it worse by blaming.
It may feel good to blame, but it never improves anything.
Only love and acceptance will make a positive difference.

Rule #3 Know Your Child’s Life Intimately

It’s sad to see how many fathers know the stock market
more intimately than their own child. Get to know all you
can about your kids. Know what their favorite toys and
colors are, who their best friends are, who their heroes
are, etc. By showing interest, you’re showing you love them.
By not asking, you show that they’re not that important to you.

Rule #4 Say “No” to Your Kids

There’s an awful lot of stuff out there for kids
these days…and of course they want to have it
all. Kids who get almost everything they want
typically aren’t very happy kids. Kids learn discipline,
self-control, and how to delay gratification when they’re
told no by their parents. It may be a difficult struggle, but
saying no and meaning it will help you to have happy, healthy,
and cooperative kids.

Rule #5 Hitting or Spanking Your Kids Doesn’t Work

There are plenty of studies showing that kids who
are spanked have lower self-esteem. Spanking your
kids will also be likely to increase the very kinds of behaviors
that you’re spanking them for. As a father, do you really want
your child to be afraid of you?

Rule #6 Treat Your Partner Extremely Well

This is where your kids get their most important
information about relationships between their parents.
Make a great effort not to fight in front of the kids.
Remember to be kind more often than trying to be right.

Rule #7 Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Many parents spend time threatening their children
when their kids aren’t cooperating. But if you
don’t follow through on the consequences, you can
threaten till the cows come home. Your children
will learn to ignore the threats. They will
understand action. If certain privileges are taken
away because of their lack of cooperation, they’ll
learn very quickly that you mean business. Try
your best to align the consequences with the
action. ( “If you don’t clean your room in time,
you won’t have time for stories before bed.”)

Rule #8 Really Listen to Your Kids

Don’t just hear their words, but learn to
understand the meaning behind what they say as
well. “I’m picking my own clothes!” might mean that
your child wants more responsibility or
independence. Be able to reflect back what your
child says to you. If you want your child to
listen to you, you absolutely must listen to
her/him.

Rule #9 Give Your Kids Responsibility as They Grow
Older

When your kids are very young, perhaps they just
help make their beds in the morning and keep their
rooms clean. As they get older, add things to
their list. Tell them that this is how a family
works…everybody has certain things that they do.
If you do it when they’re young, it’s more likely
they’ll do it when they’re older. Don’t reward
them for things that should be expected of them.

Rule #10 Tell Your Kids They’re Great All the Time

It’s especially important to tell them this when
they’re not at their best. It’s easy to tell them
when things are going well! Make it a point to
tell them specifically what you think is great
about them. This will be more meaningful than
generalized praise.
